III. THE NEED TO BE PRO-ACTIVE

Significant increase in voting and participation in Hanover will require a shift in individual priorities and a turning away from current national trends. A different model is both possible and desirable.

Town Boards and Administration
School Boards and Administration
RECOMMENDATIONS:
  • Use all available means of communication to inform the public and to create a climate of inclusiveness: the Internet, the newspaper, Town mailings, CATV, pre-recorded telephone listings of meetings, etc.
  •  Designate one school day a year as town/school Civics Day.

Citizens
RECOMMENDATIONS:
  • Citizens should register to vote, go to meetings, bring their neighbors, volunteer, run for office. Our community needs the involvement of everyone.
  • All votes are important. All citizens, satisfied or not, should show their interest in Town and school affairs by voting.
  • The Town Office, the School Supervisory Administrative Office, the Howe Library and the Etna Library are repositories of town/school information. The Town, School District and The League of Women Voters have websites to assist the public. Citizens should use these resources.

Other
RECOMMENDATION: Establish a Civic Association, such as the Community Organizational Study Committee of 1970, to address issues brought up in this report. This committee should represent various segments of the community.
