Members Remembered
Members
of the LWVUV have made significant contributions to the community as
well as to the League. This page contains biographies of some who died
in 2002. Other biographies are posted by the
year of death.
Barbara
P. Morin June 1920 - October 2002
Barbara
grew up in Providence RI, graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa
from Pembroke College and received a masters degree in History from
Smith College.
After
marrying Lawrence "Larry" Morin in 1943, they lived in New Haven,
Portsmouth, and in 1949 made a permanent move to Hanover. Barbara was
active in the Hanover LWV and was it president 1955-57. Most recently
she became an Honorary 50 year Member.
She
served as a trustee of the Howe Library, served on Hanover's Zoning
Board, was vice-president of the board of Friends of Hopkins Center and
the Conservation Council, was on the executive council of the League of
NH Craftsmen and was program committee chair of the Hanover Historical
Society. Her wonderful pottery was sold through the Hanover League of
Arts and Crafts.
Barbara
was an avid golfer and an active skier and instructor in the Ford Sayre
Ski Program. She remained adventuresome and interested in travel
as long as she was able.
Sylvia
B. Stockmayer September 1914- October 2002
Sylvia
grew
up in Quincy MA; was fashion model and lecturer in Boston and New York.
After marrying Walter Stockmayer in 1938, they lived in Boston and New
York, and finally Hanover and Norwich in 1962.
Her
main interests were her family, gardening and public affairs. She was
elected in 1970 to a three-year term as Vermont State President of the
League of Women Voters, and served on two state commissions under Gov.
Philip H. Hoff. Among her pet issues were legislation for state and
local planning - (Act 250); clean water, soil and air; elimination of
roadside billboards; land acquisition issues; and organic farming.
Sylvia
served on many recreation and conservation commissions, Hanover
Consumer Coop, CRWC, and was active in town affairs. She was fond
of sports, music and travel most of her life.
Jean
Fenner Rowland February 1907 - August 2002
Jean
was
born in New Orleans LA and attended Bryn Mawr College, PA. She
lived with her husband of fifty-five years in Rochester NY and
Colebrook CT, before moving to Hanover in 1975.
Jean
was involved in the activities and ideas of her large family. She was a
poet and a gardener, loved music, had a passion for books, politics and
world affairs, and was a member of the LWV-UV. She maintained her
grace and charm - a true lady from that cospmopolitan city of the Old
South.
Thomas
Almy 1915 - May 2002
Tom
was a
graduate of Cornell College and became Chief Resident in the Medical
Service of the New York Hospital. He was involved in research and
medical writing but his major joy was teaching; his ability to inspire
others was legendary. Tom became a moving force in the development of
the Dartmouth Medical School into a medical college of the first rank.
He was a member of the Hanover League of Women Voters for many years.
Robin
Robinson. died March 3, 2002 at the age of 99.
He
was the holder of the Boston Post Cane, given to the oldest resident of
Hanover. Ellen Robinson, who pre-deceased him, was one of the early
members of the LWV of Hanover which was founded in 1938.
Robin
Robinson graduated from Dartmouth College in 1924 as a member, of Phi
Beta Kappa, receiving honors in both mathematics and Greek. He received
a Masters and Doctorate from Harvard College in 1924 and 1929
respectively, being awarded many prizes. He taught at Harvard and
Germany before returning to Dartmouth.
He
married the former Ellen Newsome. in 1927. She was a prominent early
member of the Hanover League of Women Voters.
He was mathematics
instructor, professor in 1942, and chairman of the math department, and
chairman of the division of sciences from 1951 to 1955. His field of
specialty was analytic geometry. He published a text book as well as
many articles on mathematics and bibliography.
In
1947 he created the Robinson Reunion Plan, copyrighted as the Dartmouth
Reunion Plan, still in use at Dartmouth and many other institutions.
After
retirement he and his wife traveled around the world, and he became
consultant to Dartmouth on enrollment patterns. He was active in the
Hanover Community as president of the Hanover Consumer Cooperative
Society , and the Hanover Society Orchestra, composed several pieces of
music, played duplicate bridge twice a week until the time of his
death. For years he planned and ran weekly classical music programs on
the Dartmouth College radio station where he was affectionately known
as "Rob Rob. "
Caroline
Henderson died in March 2002 at the age of 53.
She
attended Smith College, graduating in 1970. She received her Master's
Degree from Boston College in 1976 and her Doctor's Degree from Harvard
College in 1983, specializing in Marketing. She joined the faculty at
Tuck School, and the faculty at Thayer School as an adjunct faculty,
member.
She
served Hanover and the Upper Valley. She was on the recycling
committee, a board member of WISE, volunteered at the Etna Library, was
active in the Revels North Production of Christmas Revels. She was a
member of the League of Women Voters, participating in the planning of
the community programs on the schools. She was part of that panel
discussing educational needs in the schools. She was committed to
education at all levels. She served on committees for Crossroads
Academy and the board of trustees for the Runnymede School and many
committees for the Hanover Schools on their building options. She made
a positive impact in all of these activities.
