About the League of Women Voters

of the Upper Valley

Established in 1920, the League of Women Voters is a national, grassroots, nonpartisan, political organization. Its members, both men and women, are committed to making democracy work by promoting informed citizen participation in government. Active in both Vermont and New Hampshire, the LWV of the Upper Valley is a regional League.  Members live in several area towns with the largest concentrations being in Hanover and Norwich.  In addition to activities focused on local governments, the LWVUV holds meetings and forums on issues of regional concern, such as conservation of natural resources.

Visit our League History Pages to find out where we're coming from. The LWV of the Upper Valley, a regional League was formed in 1987 from the Hanover LWV, founded in 1938.  A Norwich League had been active in the 1970's and had pioneered an active role for men members.  Before 1974, when the LWVUS enlarged its membership criteria to include men, Norwich men had formed an informal Men's Auxillary to the Norwich League of Women Voters.  One of their contributions was to serve coffee at meetings.
