Part 2: Community Resources

This chapter describes community resources provided by nonprofit organizations that are (1) funded privately and locally, and (2) situated locally (in or very near Hanover). It is organized alphabetically by category.

Museums

Enfield Shaker Museum:
historic Shaker village and herb garden, founded in 1793. Offering tours, workshops, Shaker-inspired gifts, as well as dining and accommodations in the Shakers 1841 Dwelling House. 632-4346, chosen.vale@valley.net

Hood Museum of Art:
frequently-changing special exhibitions, plus permanent collection including an important set of ancient Assyrian reliefs, European and American paintings, prints, and sculpture; and an extensive collection of ethnographic art; free admission. 646-2808, hood@dartmouth.edu, www.dartmouth.edu/~hood. Montshire Museum of Science:
hands-on exhibits and programs on science, natural history, nature, animals, and astronomy; 110 acres of nature trails; summer programs.  (802) 649-2200, montshire@montshire.net, www.montshire.org

Music

Bach Study Group:
community choral and instrumental group studies Bach cantatas; no auditions or performances; all are welcome. Joan Snell, 643-3347.

Bel Canto Chamber Singers
is  a group of auditioned singers. To audition, or to book a concert, contact Linda Ide at 802/785-2898.

Dartmouth College music groups:
The following Dartmouth music groups perform for the public: Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble, Chamberworks Series, Dartmouth Chamber Singers, Dartmouth Glee Club, Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra, Dartmouth Wind Symphony, Gospel Choir, Vaughan Recital Series (free), and World Music Percussion Ensemble. 646-2422 (box office, mailing list), www.hop.dartmouth.edu

Handel Society:
the oldest community/college chorus in the country; focuses on extended major works of the 18th to 20th centuries. Sue Ann Evans, 863-6067.

Hanover Chamber Orchestra:
a professional ensemble of musicians from Boston and points north; performs regularly at Hopkins Center. Deborah Solomon, 643-2195, deborah.solomon@valley.net

Javanese Gamelan Music:
group rehearsals open to all. Jody Diamond, 448-8837.

Lebanon Community Chorus:
unauditioned adult chorus. Becky Luce, 448-5165, becky.luce@valley.net

Lyme Town Band:
volunteer community band open to all ages; performs year-round in parades, summer concerts, nursing homes, etc. Earl Strout, (603) 795-4587.

North Country Chordsmen:

Opera North:
professional opera company providing year-round educational and musical programs; annual opera productions in August at Lebanon Opera House include a Young Audience Performance. Patricia Compton, 643-1946.

Revels North:

Upper Valley Community Band:
open to all musicians, weekly practices; year-round concerts and events. Carole Blake, (802) 295-3864.

Upper Valley Early Music Society:
meets monthly to play in recorder consorts; newcomers welcome. Barbara Prescott, 643-9345.

Upper Valley Music Center:

Casey Family Services:
offers various services for foster care, post-adoption, and family advocacy and support. (802) 649-1400, www.caseyfamilyservices.org

Child and Family Services:

Family Health Program at Visiting Nurse Alliance:
offers programs for pregnancy and new babies (nurse visits and support); fatherhood (activities and support groups; family support (play groups, parenting skills, resources); food and nutrition; and children's health (help with sick children)-and much more. Family Place:
provides assistance and education to families with young children at low or no cost; activities include playgroups, parent educational programs, home visits, counseling, etc. (802) 649-3268, the.family.place@valley.net

Family Resource Connection:

Friends of the Hanover and Norwich Schools:
provides funding for a variety of special extra activities for the local schools. Kathy Snyder, (802) 649-2914.

Good Beginnings of the Upper Valley:
a volunteer home visitor program offering help to anyone who may be expecting or have a newborn. Pat Martin, 448-1597, pat.a.martin@hitchcock.org

Hannah House:
residential, outreach and vocational services for pregnant and parenting youth. 448-5339. hannah.house.inc@valley.net

Hanover Schools Volunteer Program:
coordinates a wide variety of volunteer opportunities at all three Hanover Schools, 643-2784.

Multicultural Families of VT and NH
sponsors events such as a spring Multicultural Day at the Montshire Museum and a summer Family Camp for multicultural families (including families that are multicultural through adoption). Toni Hover, (802) 763-2121, toni.hover@valley.net

Parent organizations for the Hanover Schools:

Amnesty International:
local chapter of national organization dedicated to eradicating human rights violations and protecting prisoners of conscience worldwide; mounts international letter-writing campaigns and petitions. James Tierney, 643-4696.

Bread for the World:
nationwide Christian movement seeking justice for the world's hungry people by lobbying our nation's decision-makers. Paul Manganiello, (802) 649-3828.

Democratic Committee of Hanover:

League of Women Voters of the Upper Valley:

Rockefeller Center at Dartmouth:

World Federalist Association of Vermont and New Hampshire:
