This chapter describes community resources provided by nonprofit organizations that are (1) funded privately and locally, and (2) situated locally (in or very near Hanover). It is organized alphabetically by category.

ACORN (AIDS Community Resource Network):

Alice Peck Day Hospital Auxiliary and Volunteer Services:
volunteer opportunities at APD. Carol Harry, 448-7456.

American Red Cross:
supports blood bank, disaster assistance, health, education (first aid, CPR, water safety), swimming and lifeguard instruction, (802) 295-3635. For blood bank information, call (800) 843-3500.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center Auxiliary and Volunteer Services:
volunteer opportunities at DHMC. 650-7056, volunteer.services@hitchcock.org

David's House:
home-away-from-home for families with children being treated at DHMC. Jane DeGange, 643-2298, davids.house@valley.net

Friends of ChaD:
helps raise funds for and promotes awareness of the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth. Cinnamon Decato, 650-7250, cinnamon.decato@hitchcock.org

Friends of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center:
provides support and research programs for cancer center at DHMC; sponsors the Audrey Prouty Memorial Ride and Fitness Walk each summer; maintains the Garden of Hope. (800) 226-8744. deborah.scribner@dartmouth.edu

Good Neighbor Health Clinic:
free primary health and dental care to people with inadequate or no health insurance; staffed by volunteer doctors, dentists, and administrators. 295-1868 (health clinic); 295-7573 (Red Logan Dental Clinic).

Hospice of the Upper Valley:
medical care and support services to patients and families who are living through the final stages of life. Beth Griffin, beth.griffin@hitchcock.org, 448-5182.

Medical Centers:
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) hospital and clinic, 650-5000; Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital (APD), 448-3121.

Planned Parenthood of New England:
birth control, PAP tests, STD screening, HIV testing, pregnancy testing, options counseling, abortion services, etc.; sliding fee scale.  298-7766.

Support and Discussion Groups:
The Center for Continuing Education in the Health Sciences at DHMC: maintains a list of over 70 support and discussion groups, including (1) bereavement groups/hospice, (2) cancer support and education, (3) parental and perinatal education and support, (4) veteran support, (5) groups for people affected by a variety of diseases, and others. The listing of these groups is mailed to all Hanover residents who request it in the "Community Health Catalogue." To receive a copy, call Kate Coburn, 653-1566, kate.coburn@hitchcock.org. Upper Valley Hostel:
affordable home-away-from-home for families with adult patients and outpatients being treated at DHMC. 643-3277, uvhostel@valley.net

Visiting Nurse Alliance:
a nursing agency offering a broad variety of programs, including home care services, community wellness programs, hospice care, and family health services. 448-1597, (800) 858-1696, pat.a.martin@hitchcock.org

Women's Health Resource Center at DHMC:
provides innovative classes, workshops and lectures; free monthly women's health lectures; referral and advocacy services; a free annual Women's Health Fair; an extensive lending library; and a free quarterly newsletter. 650-HERS (4377), dhmc.womens.health.resource.center@hitchcock.org

Meeting Rooms for Nonprofit Groups

Meeting rooms are available in various local buildings for use by nonprofit groups only. These rooms are heavily used, so please inquire well in advance. In most cases, these rooms are available only when the institutions owning the space are not using them.

Richard W. Black  Community Center (48 Lebanon Street, Hanover):
rooms of various sizes. Call about availability and fee schedule.  643-5315, recdept@hanovernh.org

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center:
various rooms, ranging in size from 10 to 165 people; rooms are very busy during the academic year. 650-5739, conference.services@hitchcock.org

First Baptist Church (in Etna) Trumbull Hall:
one large room (100 people) and several smaller rooms in the church, 643-2168.

Hanover Fire and Police Station (48 Lyme Road):
small room (up to 30 people) available for occasional use, not for continuous use as in weekly meetings; no fee; not handicapped accessible. 643-2222, christopher.oconnor@hanovernh.org

Hanover High School (Lebanon Street):

Howe Library (East South Street at Currier Street):

Kendal at Hanover (80 Lyme Road):
rooms available, including a large room (100 people) and three rooms (holding 12, 20, and 125 people); no fee except for optional use of Kendal food services. 643-8900, buck@kah.kendal.org

Lutheran Church (Our Savior, on Summer Street):
rooms available; including a large room (100 people); contribution requested. 643-3703, lutheran.center@dartmouth.edu

Montshire Museum (Norwich):
a room holding up to 150. First two hours free, then $50 an hour. For $600, the entire museum may be rented to corporations, individuals, or nonprofits. (802) 649-2200, montshire@montshire.net.

Quaker Friends' Meeting (across from the Co-op):
one large room (70-80), kitchen, four small rooms; donation requested. 643-4138, crikluna@hotmail.com

Ray School (elementary school on Reservoir Road): gymnasium (350+ people), music room (400 people), smaller rooms; fees vary by user group.

Richmond Middle School (Lebanon Street):

Roth Center for Jewish Life (5 Occum Ridge):

Town Hall (Main Street):
two rooms (12-15 people and 40-50 people) may be available during business hours (8:30-4:30) and after hours by special arrangement; no fee. 643-0701, penny.hoisington@hanovernh.org

Tracy Hall (Norwich):
two small rooms (6-12 people, up to 30 people, 40-50 people) and the gym (up to 300); a fee is charged. (802) 649-1419, clerk@norwich.vt.us

United Church of Christ at Dartmouth College:
various meeting rooms available; largest accommodates 100 people; parking limited; no alcohol permitted; fees vary by user group. 643-3150, ccdc@valley.net

Witherell Center:
