Part 2: Community Resources

This chapter describes community resources provided by nonprofit organizations that are (1) funded privately and locally, and (2) situated locally (in or very near Hanover). It is organized alphabetically by category.

Dance, For People with Disabilities, Education, Film, History, International Groups

Dance

Contradance:
held regularly at the Norwich Town Hall, September through June; all ages; classes taught. To confirm dates, call Ruth Sylvester, (802) 649-1164.

Hopkins Center Dance Program at Dartmouth:
Straus Dance Studio offers ballet, modern, and jazz classes. 646-3438, hopkins.center@dartmouth.edu

Swing Dance:
various workshops and classes (no partner required) available throughout the Upper Valley. Upper Valley Swing Dance Network, 643-5341. Their website (www.savoystyle.org) includes a calendar of events plus other information.

For People with Disabilities

Family Resource Connection:
program of the NH State Library providing information resources for families with children, especially children with special needs. 271-7931, (800) 298-4321, frc@library.state.nh.us, www.state.nh.us/nhsl/frc

High Horses Therapeutic Riding Program:
works with physically, emotionally, and learning-disabled children and adults; uses adaptive horseback riding to gain freedom of movement, confidence, and self-esteem. Mary Daly (802) 333-9972.

United Developmental Services:
provides support to people with disabilities.  448-2077.

Upper Valley Support Group:
for parents of children with special needs (developmental, emotional, learning, medical, and physical disabilities); parent support groups; one-on-one support for children. Maryellen Sullivan, 448-6311, P2PNH@valley.net

Libraries

Dartmouth College Libraries:
free open stacks at all Dartmouth Libraries; restrictions apply to checking out books; library cards available for a fee. 646-2567.

School Libraries:
The public school libraries are community resources for use by any resident. Ray School, 643-6655; Richmond Middle School, 643-6040; Hanover High School, 643-3431.

Upper Valley Business & Education Partnership:
liaison linking community schools with local employers; programs include "job shadow" days and student internships. Kathi Terami, 643-3431, ext. 235.

Film

Dartmouth Film Society:
one of the oldest student-run film groups in the country; presents twice-weekly film series (Wednesdays and Sundays) centered on a unifying theme each term; sponsors yearly tributes to prominent people in film; open to the public by membership pass or individual ticket; Spaulding Auditorium at the Hopkins Center, 646-2576, www.dartmouth.edu/~hop/

Loew Films:
presents films on Thursday and Saturday nights at Dartmouth's Loew Auditorium; includes the annual "Telluride at Dartmouth" film program, in which six films from the renowned Telluride Film Festival come to Dartmouth each fall; Loew Auditorium at the Hood Museum, 646-2576.

Nugget Cinemas:
four first-run features and foreign films nightly; all profits go to the Hanover Improvement Society (described in the "Service Organizations" section, online page 11). 643-2769.

History

Enfield Shaker Museum:
historic Shaker village and herb garden, founded in 1793. Offering tours, workshops, Shaker-inspired gifts, as well as dining and accommodations in the Shakers 1841 Dwelling House. 632-4346, chosen.vale@valley.net

Hanover Historical Society:
holds meetings focussing on Hanover's history; works to preserve Hanover archives and history. Sylvia Nelson, 643-6529.

Webster Cottage Museum:
includes many possessions of Dartmouth alumnus Daniel Webster, said to have roomed here as a student; maintained by the Hanover Historical Society; located at 32 North Main Street. Sylvia Nelson, 643-6529.

International Groups

French Conversation and Potluck Lunch:
meets monthly. Kathy Astraukas, (802) 795-4311.

German Conversation and Potluck Lunch:
meets monthly. Cynthia Wigington, (802) 333-4030.

Hanover-Joigny Exchange:
coordinates exchange programs between Hanover and our twin city in Joigny, France. Lorraine "Rainie" Kelly, (802) 649-2020.

Hanover-Nihonmatsu Exchange:
coordinates efforts to start up exchange programs with our twin city of Nihonmatsu, Japan. Marilyn "Willy" Black, 643-2866 or Kate Connolly, 643-3822.

International Women's Club of the Upper Valley:
organization that brings together women with international experience, interest, background, or origin to create peer exchange. Irene MacArthur , 643-3033.
