Part 2: Community Resources

This chapter describes community resources provided by nonprofit organizations that are (1) funded privately and locally, and (2) situated locally (in or very near Hanover). It is organized alphabetically by category.

For Children and Youth

Artventures at the Hood Museum:
Saturday morning guided interactive tours for children eight and over; themes vary with changing exhibitions; free admission. 646-1469.

Billings Farm and Museum:
working farm environment in Woodstock shows farm animals and preserves 19th century farming and farm life practices; many seasonal expositions and hands-on activities for adults and children. (802) 457-2355.

Camps and Clinics:
various camps and school vacation mini-camps are offered through the Hanover Parks and Recreation Department, 643-5315; the Carter Community Center, 448-3055; and the Montshire Museum, (802) 649-2200. A wide variety of athletic clinics and camps for children are also available through the Dartmouth Athletic Department. Carter Community Center (CCB):

Chess Clubs:

Child Care Project:
child care resource and referral agency; assists working parents in finding child care; provides training to child care providers. 646-3233.

Ford Sayre Ski Council:
volunteer group providing recreational and racing skiing instruction for children and adults in Nordic, Alpine, and freestyle skiing, ski jumping and snowboarding. 643-2226.

HASP (Hanover After-School Program):
nonprofit after-school activities for children grades 1-5; open enrollment; apply well in advance. Bonna Wieler, 643-2411.

Hanover Hockey Association:
hockey instruction and competition for children. Brian Drew, 643-6573.

Libraries:

Montshire Museum of Science:
hands-on exhibits and programs on science, natural history, nature, animals, and astronomy; 110 acres of nature trails; summer programs and camps. (802) 649-2200, montshire@montshire.net, www.montshire.org

Parks and Recreation Department:
offers a wide variety of athletic and non-athletic activities, plus summer camps and school vacation mini-camps, 643-5315. See Chapter 1, page 3, for a description of this Town department.

Pocket Guide:
a guide to Upper Valley resources for teens (including activities, crisis hotlines, volunteer opportunities, and more). Family Service Coordinator, LISTEN Center, 448-4553.

Ray School:
Play Space and hiking trails in the back of the school are open to the community when school is not in session.

SCAD (Skating Club at Dartmouth):
instruction and competition in figure skating for pre-school through adults. Steven Bird, 643-8576.

Scouts:

Storrs Pond Recreation Area:
tennis and swimming lessons, private or group; junior lifeguard program, pond, pool, athletic fields, picnic areas. 643-2134.

Toddler's Morning Out:
enrichment program for children 18-36 months. Sunnie McPheters, 643-6747.

Toddler Time in Hanover: weekly drop-in playgroup for toddlers and caregivers. Mayer Room, Howe Library, 643-4120.

Upper Valley Music Center:

Upper Valley Youth Community Resource Network:

Valley Quest:
family treasure hunts of special places in the Upper Valley; sponsored by Vital Communities of the Upper Valley, Steve Glazer, (802) 291-9100.

Youth-In-Action:
