This chapter describes community resources provided by nonprofit organizations that are (1) funded privately and locally, and (2) situated locally (in or very near Hanover). It is organized alphabetically by category.

Religious Institutions

Tucker Foundation at Dartmouth:
coordinates various town & gown community service projects (for education, people with disabilities, food and shelter, and health care); maintains an extended list of religious institutions; supports the moral and spiritual work of the College. 646-3350.

For Senior Citizens

Health Care Assistance:
home care, hospice needs, visiting nurses, home health aides, health clinics, physical therapists, and homemakers are available through the Visiting Nurse Alliance; services may be covered by private insurance, Medicare, or the Town; anyone may refer to the VNA. Retirement Communities:
Atria The Greens at Hanover (retirement community) 643-5512; Hanover Terrace Health Care (nursing home) 643-2854; Harvest Hill (independent and assisted-living, associated with Alice Peck Day Hospital), 448-7442; Kendal at Hanover (continuing care retirement community), 643-8900; Outreach House (affordable assisted-living home), 643-7744; Wheelock Terrace (assisted care), 643-7290.

Independent Living Assistance:
Grafton County Senior Citizens Council operates the Upper Valley Senior Center, offering programs and services to assist people to remain independent their own homes, including home delivered meals, senior dining room, adult day care, transportation, chore services, education, and recreational programs. 448-4213. cdustin@GCSCC.org

Volunteer Opportunities:
RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) provides volunteer opportunities for people over 55. Teresa Volta, 448-1825; RSVP@valley.net

Service Organizations

Gifts For A Greater Good:
Holiday Gift Sale and Auction is a fund-raiser that transforms our "more than enough" into money to help those left in need after a disaster. Maureen Hall, 643-42l5 or Penny McClure, 643-6132.

Hanover Improvement Society:
aims to benefit the community and sustain its special qualities; supports various projects such as winter activities on Occum Pond and plantings by the Garden Club; owns and operates Storrs Pond and Campion Ice Rink; supported mainly by Nugget Cinemas revenues. Lions Club:
helps support over 20 local charitable activities including eye and hearing programs, college scholarships, youth sports, and senior citizen activities; sponsors the Auto and Outdoor Recreation Show each March. Cam Rankin, 643-8913.

Rotary Club:

Upper Valley United Way:
provides support for human service agencies through fundraising, fund distribution, program review, communicating, networking, needs assessment, and referrals. 448-2766, www.uvuw.org, email info@uvuw.org

Upper Valley Community Foundation:
distributes grants to local organizations to better the community; regional division of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and the Vermont Community Foundation. Lisa Cashdan, 653-0387.

Vital Communities:
works to engage citizens in community life and to foster the long-term balance of cultural, economic, environmental, and social well-being; projects include Community Profiles, Valley Vital Signs, and Valley Quest. (802) 291-9100, vital.communities@valley.net, www.vitalcommunities.org

Shelter and Food Assistance

 Co-op's Community Programs:
the Co-op Food Stores help feed the needy through Country Harvest Program (distributing day-old food), food drives, and Harvest Partners Garden (growing and distributing vegetables) and support other local nonprofits through corporate giving programs; consumer run and owned grocery stores in Hanover (643-2667) and Lebanon (643-4889).

The Haven:
emergency shelter, food assistance, free used clothing, educational programs to help people get back to work; most guests are families. (802) 296-5995.

Headrest:
provides temporary shelter for adults with substance abuse issues, mental health issues, dual diagnosis, and general homelessness. 448-4872 (office), 448-4400 (hotline).

LISTEN Center:
economic and family self-help programs including housing and utility assistance, money management, food assistance, fuel assistance, and family programs; funded in part through their Thrift Stores. 448-4553.

Twin Pines Housing Trust:
provides affordable housing through shared equity and cooperative ownership and rentals. (802) 291-6700.

Upper Valley Habitat for Humanity:
builds homes through volunteer labor, donations, and the help of the future homeowner; houses are sold at no profit and no interest cost. (802) 295-1854.
