The following program topics have been adopted by the membership as a focus for this year. Others may be added as the year unfolds

International Relations Committee

Policy: Promote peace in an interdependent world by working cooperatively with other nations and strengthening international organizations.

Focus: Seminar cosponsored with Dartmouth's Rockefeller Center on topic related to globalization and international trade agreements.

Natural Resources Committee

Policy: Promote an environment beneficial to life through the protection and wise management of natural resources by recognizing the interrelationships of air quality, energy, land-use, waste management and water resources.

Focus: Hold an educational series on groundwater titled "Whose Water is it Anyway", and hold an environmental seminar at the Montshire Museum in the spring.

Representative Goverment Committee

Social Policy Committee

Policy: Secure equal rights and equal opportunity for all. Promote social and economic justice and the health and safety of all Americans.

Focus: This year this committee will focus on medical care, with a focus on cost and insurance factors.

Voters Service Committee

Policy: At both the local and regional levels, the LWVUV will provide citizens with unbiased, factual information, for reaching their own decisions. It will encourage citizens to be informed, be involved, to register, and to vote.

Focus: LWVUV plans to

  • hold candidate meetings for contested elections;
  • help register eligible high school students;
  • provide useful information on our website for campaign 2008;
  • monitor current issues related to representative government; prepare fact sheets on ballot issues; and
  • hold a meeting on the national popular vote compact.

Regional Growth Committee

Policy: This topic is an update for local program that dates to 1980. Support active citizen participation in planning growth for the Upper Valley, encourage close cooperation between the towns and major institutions; and encourage inter-community coordination and regional planning.

Focus: Last year we focused on capital planning. This year we will examine other growth management tools, ways to measure growth, and will explore potential areas for regional cooperation and regional vision for 2020.
