Reversing Global Warming as We Create a Global Economy.
Our nation and world face two major and linked crises. First, if we don't significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reverse global warming, our entire planet will face severe and irreversible damage. Second, the global economy is experiencing a massive increase in unemployment and a lowering in the standard of living of tens of millions of people.

Please join Senator Bernie Sanders and author Bill McKibben for a discussion on how we can address both crises by developing economic models that emphasize local and sustainable production.

The Obama Administration's Trade Policy: Old Wine in New Bottles?.
Speakers:
  • Douglas Irwin, Robert E. Maxwell Professor of Arts and Sciences, Department of Economics, Dartmouth College
  • Matthew J. Slaughter, Associate Dean for the MBA Program; Professor of International Economics, Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College

The Obama administration faces unprecedented economic policy challenges. One of those challenges is U.S. trade policy. Will the world's current economic crisis lead to greater protectionism? Should the Obama administration renegotiate NAFTA and review previous trade agreements? How should the large U.S. trade deficit be addressed?

These issues will be addressed by Professor Irwin discussing why trade is unpopular with the public because it is tied in public mind to job loss and why the talk of "failed trade policies of the past" is wrong. Primary focus of his discussion will be on the trade deficit and it underlying determinants (savings and investment, here and China) and how they will be affected by the current economic crisis. Professor Slaughter will discuss the current condition of the U.S. and global economies, and the policy options the United States could pursue regarding international trade, investment, and immigration.

Co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Upper Valley and by the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and Social Sciences at Dartmouth College

Making Sense of Biofuels.
A FREE Public Lecture by Dartmouth Prof. Lee Lynd

Biofuels (fuels produced from plant matter) are potentially renewable, involve near-zero greenhouse gas emissions, and address energy security and rural economic development concerns. Yet there are also deep reservations about biofuels stemming from potential competition with food production and habitat loss.

Dartmouth Professor Lee Lynd will share perspectives on these issues based on his three decades of active research in the biomass field. Professor Lynd will also describe briefly the biofuels technology, barriers to cost-effective production, and land use issues plus suggestions as to how these might be resolved.

Lee R. Lynd is a Professor of Engineering at Dartmouth College's Thayer School of Engineering; he is also the co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer, Mascoma Corporation

Come share in the discussion and some fine refreshments.

Sponsored by the Sierra Club.

Managing Climate Change: Achieving an 80% Reduction in Greenhouse Gases. A FREE public presentation by Colin High

Colin High is the Chairman and co-founder of Resource Systems Group Inc., an energy, environment, and transportation consulting company. He is currently evaluating the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of new energy technologies for the US Department of Energy.

In less than a year the US government has moved from denial to supporting an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Colin High will talk about the strategies of achieving this: cap and trade programs, allowance auctions, carbon taxes, renewable portfolio standards, mandatory controls, lifecycle emissions analysis, and carbon product labeling.

Colin will also discuss whether an 80% reduction is enough versus targeting 350 parts per million; the benefits of green jobs; energy security; plus the upcoming meetings in Copenhagen and the cap and trade bill moving through Congress.

Come share in the discussion and some fine refreshments. SPONORED BY THE SIERRA CLUB.

The Future of Vermont Yankee.
Vermont Yankee, the state's sole nuclear plant, is scheduled to close in 2012. Entergy, the corporate owner of the plant, has petitioned to extend the plant's license for another 20 years. That request is being considered by, among other bodies, the Vermont Legislature. Vermont is the only state in the country in which a state legislature has the power to deny a nuclear plant relicensing.

Next Monday that choice will be discussed as expert panelists, citizens, local legislators - and you - participate in a lively and informed forum on the future of Vermont Yankee.

Panelists:

  • John Dreyfuss - Vermont Yankee Director of Nuclear Safety Assurance
  • Arnie Gundersen Chief Engineer, VT Legislature's Vermont Yankee Oversight Panel
  • Dave Lamont - Director of Regulated Utility Planning, Vermont Department of Public Service
  • James Moore - Clean Energy Organizer for the Vermont Public Interest Research Group

Moderator: VT State Rep. Margaret Cheney, House Natural Resources and Energy Committee.

Refreshments Provided.

Sponsored by the Norwich and Thetford Energy Committees, Sustainable Energy Resource Group (SERG) and the Sierra Club.
