NATIONAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION - SEPTEMBER 14, 2006
A bill that would legalize the National Security Administration’s (NSA) warrantless wiretapping program could come before the Senate next week. The National Security Surveillance Act of 2006, S. 2453, would threaten the checks and balances of our government and could jeopardize the civil liberties of ordinary Americans by expanding the domestic surveillance powers of the President.
Take Action Against the So-Called "Federal Election Integrity Act"
The League of Women Voters strongly opposes H.R. 4844, the “Federal Election Integrity Act of 2006," which would require all voters, beginning in 2008, to obtain and show government-issued photo ID that proves their citizenship in order to vote. Take action now, or read the letter sent to Members of Congress by LWVUS and coalition partners.
ACTION ALERT: Stop the House Attempt to Legalize Warrantless Wiretapping
Like the Senate, the House is considering a bill that would legalize the National Security Administration's (NSA) warrantless wiretapping program. The Electronic Surveillance Modernization Act, H.R. 5825, would seriously jeopardize the civil liberties of ordinary Americans and threaten the checks and balances of our government by expanding the domestic surveillance powers of the President. The bill is likely to come up for a vote this week.
H.R. 5825 would legalize eavesdropping on ordinary citizens without any individualized warrant, sanctioning the NSA warrantless wiretapping program. This program has already been found to be unconstitutional by the federal courts. Yet this bill would authorize the President to continue to bypass warrant requirements and spy on individuals without judicial oversight.Sign up to receive Action Alerts directly by email.
